The richest sources of selenium are seafood, liver, meat and eggs. It is also found in cereals, fruits and vegetables and nuts, but in much smaller quantities.

The recommended daily intake for adults, based on reference values for food labeling for selenium, is 55 µg. We consume less of it with food in Europe, 40 µg.

Risk groups for insufficient selenium intake are people with a monotonous diet, strict vegans, and people on low-energy diets and low-protein diets.
