Removal of water from the body

Friday, 05 May 2023

Customer question:

How do I get rid of water from my body? Anonymous customer's question

Pharmacist's answer:

The body loses water mainly through urine excretion with the help of the kidneys. Profuse sweating – which can result from intense exercise, hot weather, or a high body temperature – can also dramatically increase the amount of water lost through evaporation.

Swelling around the ankles and on the abdomen, puffy face, weight fluctuations, and cellulite - all these symptoms can indicate water retention in the body. This can be due to a sedentary lifestyle, insufficient physical activity, and an unbalanced diet.

In addition, these problems can be aggravated by hormonal imbalance or even hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle. The cause of water retention in the body can also be specific diseases or taking certain medications.

Senseful advice is as follows:

  • Drink more water: it may sound paradoxical, but this is precisely what will regulate water metabolism.
  • Increase your fiber intake: this will help you better manage the available fluid in your body and avoid the accumulation of excess water.
  • Limit your carbohydrate intake: avoid carbohydrates that contain large amounts of gluten, e.g., white bread, flour, and sweet pastries.
  • Reduce the amount of salt in your diet: salt causes excessive fluid retention in the body.
  • Take potassium and magnesium: these precious minerals affect water-electrolyte and acid-base balance.
  • Increase physical activity: movement accelerates metabolism, stimulates circulation, and improves fluid excretion.
  • give up alcohol
  • try the sauna: spend a reasonable amount of time in the sauna, as you can get rid of excess fluid with a short pampering in the heat.

The retention of water hurts both our health and general well-being. For example, this can often cause women's dissatisfaction with their appearance. In addition, this problem can significantly affect the functioning of our kidneys or cardiovascular system. However, if the water retention is due to other health problems, doctors will be the ones who may be able to help manage the condition.
