Beta-glucans - in general

Beta-glucans are types of fiber found in the cells of certain types of yeasts, algae, bacteria and fungi.

They are also found in some plants, such as oats and barley.

Why do people take beta-glucans?

Beta-glucans made from yeast - in certain forms they can help lower cholesterol (Authorized Claim). Studies have shown that they can slightly lower total cholesterol and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Beta-glucans have also been frequently studied by many experts in people with certain types of cancer. Unfortunately, its effectiveness in this regard has not yet been proven.

Studies:

A 2011 report states that the beta-glucan found in oats can help control cholesterol. 3 Based on studies conducted over the past 13 years, the report’s authors found that beta-glucan derived from oats can significantly lower total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels. The authors found that the average daily consumption of oats was associated with a 5% and 7% reduction in total cholesterol or LDL, respectively.

A 2014 meta-analysis showed similar results. The researchers focused on studies that included at least 3 grams (g) of beta-glucan per day and found that it lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, but did not affect HDL or triglyceride cholesterol levels.
