Special care should be taken when taking high doses of calcium to increase its absorption and in diseases of the liver and kidneys, as too high doses of lysine can cause gallstones and kidney damage. Lysine and arginine interactions are also possible as they have the same metabolic pathways in the body. High doses of arginine can lower lysine levels in the body and vice versa. Concomitant use of aminoglycoside antibiotics with lysine may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
