What is a suitable diet during breastfeeding?

As a breastfeeding mom, there isn't a moment of the day when your body isn't actively producing milk for your baby. For this reason, it is extremely important to eat foods rich in nutrients throughout the day, which have a beneficial effect on your body and, consequently, on your baby's body as well.

In the list below you will find a great selection of foods that are recommended for consumption while breastfeeding.

Although these foods have not been clinically proven to be lactogenic or galactogenic, a large number of them have been used worldwide for centuries for these purposes. The mentioned foods are enriched with a mixture of healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants.

A common problem in the first weeks and months of breastfeeding is hunger due to the increased caloric needs caused by breastfeeding. Avocados contain almost 80% fat, which can help maintain a feeling of satiety and also provide the body with essential fats. Avocado is also a natural source of vitamins B, C, E and K, folic acid and potassium.

Oats or oatmeal

Oats are a common food choice for milk production. In addition to its potential milk-enhancing properties, oats also have many benefits for nursing mothers. It is an excellent source of carbohydrates (producing milk requires a lot of energy), fiber and vitamins and minerals. In addition, oatmeal ensures a feeling of satiety.

Nuts are another super food that is naturally enriched with essential minerals such as iron, calcium and zinc, as well as vitamins B and K. They are also an excellent source of essential fatty acids and protein. In addition to their exceptional nutritional value, nuts are considered lactogenic in many parts of the world. Nuts have been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. This is especially true for almonds, which are not only written about in a lot of Ayurvedic literature, but are also one of the most widespread lactogenic foods in the world.

Legumes are an excellent source of protein, vitamins, minerals and phytoestrogens and are a staple in North African, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine, making them one of the most accessible galactagogues. Chickpeas have been used as a galactagogue since ancient Egypt. Soy has the highest phytoestrogen content. Eating a variety of legumes is good for general health, as well as for ensuring milk supply.

Mushrooms are not usually considered a lactogenic food, but some types of mushrooms are a good source of the polysaccharide beta-glucan, which is considered to be the main lactogenic agent. In a certain clinical investigation, it was found that nursing mothers who increased their intake of foods rich in beta-glucan saw an increase in milk production. Reishi, shiitake, maitake, shimeji and oyster mushrooms have the highest beta-glucan content in the mushroom family.

Green leafy vegetables

Green leafy vegetables contain phytoestrogens, which have been proven to have a positive effect on milk production. This may be the key to understanding their lactogenic power.

Seeds provide a concentrated source of all nutrients such as protein, healthy fats and minerals such as iron, zinc and calcium. Like nuts, seeds have not been clinically proven to have lactogenic properties, but due to their high vitamin and mineral content, they have been used for centuries to help nursing mothers.

It is one of the richest sources of beta-glucan, which is a polysaccharide known to increase prolactin, the lactation hormone. One of the best things about barley is that you can add it to soups, salads or even stews.

Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, which you need even more during breastfeeding than during pregnancy. This vitamin plays a key role in the growth of teeth, muscles and bones in children and babies.

Blueberries are considered a super food because of their extraordinary amount of antioxidants. Antioxidants will enter your baby's body through your milk and thus help him fight against free radicals and oxidative stress, which could damage his DNA.

Breastfeeding teas

Breastfeeding teas are basically made from herbs and supplements. You can prepare the tea as you like, either with one herb or with a combination of herbs. Some herbs that you can combine are milk thistle, triplata and cordabenedikta.

By choosing and eating real and natural foods, you will have a beneficial effect on your health, well-being and, as a result, also on milk production. Proper nutrition will also pay off in the development of your baby, who will consume all the essential nutrients, vitamins, fats and minerals through your diet. With the joint action of nutrition and Lactil dietary supplement you will have a beneficial effect on lactation.
