Bandages are medical devices that protect, stabilize, and treat body injuries. They are usually made from cotton, elastane, gauze, or synthetic fibers and are designed to wrap around injured body parts. Bandages have several purposes, from compression to reduce swelling, immobilization to stabilize damaged bones and joints, to protect wounds from infection.
For sprains and dislocations, elastic bandages are often used to support and reduce joint mobility, which helps reduce pain and swelling and accelerates healing. Compression bandages prevent and treat swelling and improve circulation in problems such as varicose veins or deep vein thrombosis. These bandages help maintain pressure on the affected area, improving blood flow and reducing swelling. Gauze bandages are often used to cover wounds, allowing the skin to breathe while protecting the wound from dirt and bacteria. These bandages are usually sterile and may also contain antiseptic substances to prevent infection. For more extensive injuries or after surgery, multi-layered bandages are used, providing additional protection and absorption of wound secretions. For fractures and more severe bone injuries, harder, immovable bandages such as plaster or plastic are used to immobilize the injured area, allowing the bones to heal correctly. These bandages are vital to ensure proper bone alignment during the healing process and prevent further injury.
